    A broad swath of Triassic-age red sandstone sweeps up the center of New Jersey: the Piedmont ("foot of the mountain").  At the Watchung Mountains and Hudson Palisades, basalt lava flows interrupt the sandstone to form hills that feature some rather high waterfalls.
